The MENA not so CRISTALS awards 2013
By Admin I: as much as we’d like to be objective in such a post, we just can’t! It’s that money oriented advertising competitions keep tapping on our nerves, the nerves that made us email the MENA cristals asking for a media spot, simply because we believe that online media and especially bloggers like us and our fellows, are highly more influential than formal press that is rarely ‘correct’ if you know what I mean. We did not get an answer, so from now on, feel free to call us anarchists (and yes we managed to be there, in a way).
Despite the fact that the MENA cristal festival is not highly ranked, we were really hoping for some fair wins, and for one single time, we were hoping to miss the propaganda campaigns that win because the agency paid well, faked an edit, or had most of its board members in the Jury, but that didn’t happen.
Let’s cut it short, here are the winners, and seriously we can’t but be in shock for JWT Beirut’s second ranking for example, simply because the agency did a tremendous amount of good work this year (Heineken, Touch, Smart, 605 Depechemode) while Leo Burnett Beirut (1st rank) showered the market with unfortunate campaigns (alfa and Ksara excluded). So JWT was named network of the year with a shower of cristals, while Leo was named agency of the year for quantity, not quality.
Congrats for the well deserved wins, such as ‘Christmas in September’, and hard luck for those who are still depending on ‘LBCI and Cheyef 7alak’ to win awards. It was a sad year, with sad wins.

lol … you guys are either JWT employees or MTV fans… your blind hatred for Leo Burnett and LBCi or BBDO is becoming ridiculous. Rather than blaming those agencies, why not blame the festival jury?
For example I do not understand how alfa and Ksara won less awards than… café super brazil?!?!? 3 grand prix? really???
On another note if you check the Mena Cristal full wins you will realize that LBCi Cheyef 7alak won 7 awards, and LBCi Drama won 5!!! so why say “hard luck” to those winning campaigns? you got me confused there….
“Christmas in September” rocked and was well rewarded. it surely deserved to be the campaign of the year (instead of the stupid café case!)
Hello! We did blame the jury by saying that it had subjective members, and no we’re not a part of any agency or tv.
We have your same questions, Cafe super brazil is super ridiculous..
the hard luck was for BBDO that only counts on the LBC ads, it shows that the agency lacks clients, content and/or creativity.
Winning awards is never a firm indicator of success.

Guys, I like you and I said it before… you want to be anarchist that is your call but please do not be stupid or ignorant. I urge you to do proper research before posting replies:
1 – BBDO have a large portfolio of clients, check it before you accuse them immaturely…
2 – Just like other multinationals, they produced a lot of successful ads on many brands… so content was not lacking at all.
3 – I just rechecked and their wins included brands like Dewars (Gold Cristal), Skoda, BankMed etc… They won a dozen of awards in that show and you accuse them of lacking creativity?
I am starting to feel you guys are a bunch of immature children on those keyboards!
Josef, we don’t have to justify what every letter we say,
what we meant is that the majority of BBDO’s wins during the last 2 years was focused on cheyef 7alak, which is a bad sign whether you like it or not.. There’s an evident problem somewhere; blame it on clients, creativity or whatever > BBDO is NOT COMPETING.
We really won’t go into personal accusations, for all we care, yes we are immature children on keyboards.
